14. Yes, that's one of the first things they looked for
in the sudden bird dieoffs. I read somewhere that preliminary research had turned up a fungal infection, but I haven't read anything more about that. I do know that they've ruled out H5N1.

As for the kids, it could be salmonella, written off as stomach flu. Salmonella can kill a kid pretty quickly through dehydration. ConAgra has a lot of explaining to do about how the contamination happened, since it's usually confined to animal products like chicken meat and egg products.

Then again, Smith died after a "stomach flu," so there may indeed be a potentially fatal one out there.
