72. Sorry...not enough jails on the planet

I was hoping this would get people thinking about alcoholism and the disease it is and EFFECTIVE ways to deal with the problem. Of people who drink, more than not, have driven under what would be considered legally intoxicated... .08.

There is sticking people in jail and then when they get out, the big drunken party they other words, totally ineffective treatment and then there is alternative and creative sentencing that actually deals with the problem.

So, you have to decide which is most important to you...a pound-of-flesh and no behavioral change or effective treatment for this problem...counseling, visits to the morgue, having to drive around with EMT people while they dig bodies out of drunken wrecks, therapy, 12 step program or something similar, peer counseling, etc....THESE things really work.

It should be obvious to people that what we are doing is NOT working. More people are killed on the roads every year than American soldiers were killed in Viet Nam and the laws get tougher all the time and yet are totally ineffective as is. Punishing an alcoholic simply does not work. You cannot punish a disease. Creative and alternative sentencing has been shown to be effective.
