You wouldn't believe how many times I have heard average people I meet say that the president is a figurehead with little real power. I insist to them as vehemently as I can that they are mistaken. It's usually fruitless. Most people are convinced that it doesn't matter who wins in any election. The right wing promotes this sentiment. It serves their agenda. This is what we, as Democrats, have to work against and change. People need to understand the importance of the executive branch. Most people don't understand that the executive branch appoints just about every position of real power in every department. Congress only makes laws and spends money. We could have a brilliant congress and a wonderful judiciary, but with an incompetent executive branch the government is useless.
