18. That's not how it works.
At some point in time, Sen. Frist will file a cloture petition to cut off further debate. This is IF he has not reached an agreement with Sen. Reid about a date and time for a vote. (I had heard that Frist was pushing for Friday for the vote on Alito.) So, for a while there, there wasn't even a need to file for cloture.

This is indeed news. It means that one US Senator is pushing his Dem colleagues to try and extend the debate (or filibuster) on Alito. (I certainly hope that other Dems join this call. I am sure that Sens. Boxer, Kennedy and Feingold will, they are all very good Dems.) I hope he pulls it off. Now where's that number for Chafee, Collins and Snowe. I got some dialing to do. (I live in MA, so I will call surrounding states.)
