89. i spoke to a room filled with pro-Israel Americans
at first, they were all very defensive about any criticisms of Israel ... they thought i would argue in support of "the other side" ...

what i told them was that it didn't matter whether Israel started the latest conflict or whether Hezbollah started it ... in the end, if they are pro-Israel I told them, war will only make the situation worse ... retaliation on civilian targets will make Israel less safe, not safer ...

today, we often see scenes of Palestinian teenagers throwing rocks at heavily armed Israeli troops ... tomorrow, I said, the weapons pointed at Israel will grow deadlier and deadlier ... the path to Israel's survival, the only path, will be finding a real truce with her enemies and neighbors ... and time is running out on that ...

the old saying gets it right: if you want peace, work for justice ...

these ideas received a surprisingly positive reaction ...
