South Korea - 'RSOI' and 'Foal Eagle'
navytimes.com - Feb. 3, 2006 - Although North Korea is protesting, joint military exercises known as "RSOI" and "Foal Eagle" are scheduled for March 2006. Army Gen. B.B. Bell took command of three forces (UN, US and Korea -- although Seoul has expressed desire to begin discussions on maintaining command of their own troops). Bell replaced Gen. Leon J. LaPorte.
Roughly 29,500 U.S. troops are based in South Korea, but their numbers are set to decline to 25,000 by 2008 as a part of the Pentagon's worldwide realignment of forces. The Americans will also move their headquarters from Yongsan Garrison in central Seoul to Camp Humphreys in Pyongtaek, about 50 miles south of Seoul. A third round of talks at the North's Mt. Baekdu remain unscheduled while the North continues to protest the upcoming joint military exercises. North Korea has said the drills are merely a U.S. rehearsal to attack them. Washington has denied that.

Kazakhstan - Eagle of Steppes 2006
denfensenews.com - Feb. 3, 2006 - A U.S. military unit will take part in anti-terrorism exercises organized by Astana and London. The Kazakhstan ministry said the U.S. unit would take part in planning operations at headquarters set up for the exercises set for September in the southern Almaty region. In the last set of similar exercises, the U.S. was only an observer. This announcement followed a three-day visit to Kazakhstan by a delegation of the U.S. Central Command. It has not been said which U.S. unit will take part in the exercise.

Phillipines - Balikatan
Feb. 1, 2006 - These joint exercises are at the crux of a 1998 treaty (Visiting Forces Agreement) which was designed to strengthen and modernize the Phillippine military's capability. There was a move this year by the Philippine Congress to scrap the treaty because the U.S. has refused to turn over U.S. soldiers in the alleged rape of a Filipina student. A concurrent joint resolution has been filed in the Philippine Congress for the purpose of serving a notice for the renegotiation of the treaty.

Nationwide

Cyber Storm
DHS, agencies plan joint Cyber Storm exercise - The Homeland Security Department’s Cyber Storm cybersecurity exercise scheduled for next week will have a worldwide scope, an industry official said today. Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom will join 20 companies and two U.S. government agencies, said a senior industry official who requested anonymity because of the information’s sensitive nature. Cyber Storm will test federal and private-sector readiness for cyberattacks, particularly against critical infrastructure. The massive exercise, scheduled for Feb. 6-10, has been planned for a long time, the official said. Participants will face realistic scenarios, the official said.

Near Detroit
voicenews.com - Feb. 3, 2006 - North American Aerospace Defense Command and service members at Selfridge Air National Guard Base spent much of the previous weeks drilling and preparing for the week-long Super Bowl festivities. The 107th Fighter Squadron, and elements of the 127th Wing at Selfridge, were joined by multiple Cessna aircraft, a C-21 Learjet and H-65 Dolphin helicopters, in the skies over southeast Michigan as they drilled and practiced for any contingency. Also involved in the effort are many Canadian aircraft, since NORAD is an umbrella body that can assume command of both U.S. and Canadian military aircraft. CF-18s out of Bagotville, Quebec, a CH-146 Griffin helicopter out of Kingston, Ontario, and E-3 Sentry Airborne Early Warning and Control System aircraft and air refueling tankers were all participating in low-altitude exercises last week.

Toledo
mlive.com - Feb. 3, 2006 - About 170 Reservists of the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based 24th Marines, Company A, 1st Battalion, departed the Marine Corps Reserve Center just before midnight for exercises in Toledo designed to mimic the battlefront they expect to see in a few months in Iraq. Maneuvers were focused in or near an empty, 10-story building in Toledo, as soldiers don full combat gear and fire blank ammunition in exercises today, Saturday and Sunday. Local citizens are being asked to keep a 30-yard distance from the Marines as they train. (room-to-room security drills)

Hampton Roads - TRUEX
February 3, 2006 - TRUEX = Training in an Urban Environment Exercise. Roughly 2,100 Marines and sailors of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit will be in Hampton Roads, VA in late February for two weeks of training in preparation for upcoming deployment. The Marines will operate out of several area military installations including Naval Station Norfolk, Fort Eustis and Naval Air Station Oceana and conduct urban-combat training from Feb. 27 to March 12. During the TRUEX, the soldiers will fire weapons, conduct patrols, operate vehicle checkpoints, react to ambushes, respons to mass-casualty scenarios and counter the threat posed by roadside bombs. Residents of Norfolk, Newport News, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and surrounding communities can expect to see Marines periodically throughout the exercise. Citizens are also likely to notice more military helicopers and ground vehicles than usual.
The 24th MEU is composed of its command element, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 365 (Reinforced), and MEU Service Support Group 24.

When you find a news article which outlines a US Military exercise, provide a link, give a brief synopsis (because links eventually go dead) providing the aspect and scope of the exercise (Why? Where? How many? How long? What branch? What equipment? etc.). Likewise, if you find a news item which discusses an exercise to take place in the future, please post that information here as well. ~CornField
