As much as a foot of hail fell on Beaver County on Thursday between 5:15 and 5:50 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo. The ice pellets covered the rural area in a blanket of white that turned a major highway into an icy pathway. The state brought out the snow plows.

The hail was so deep that some cars were unable to drive through it, as if they had bottomed out in a snow drift, said Keith Shadden, the county's emergency management director.

"It looked just like it does here in the wintertime. When I went and checked on these locations, I was walking on ice a foot thick,” he said. "It was kind of unusual for August.”

How bizarre is this? It's usually blazing hot this time of the year. It's 67 degrees this morning in OKC. And the Panhandle is now in a flood watch because of the possibility of 2-4 inches of rain this weekend.
