"Only a few short decades ago, it seemed as though the habitat of the pelican had been reduced to cartoons and comic strips. This improbable bird, so clumsy on the ground but so graceful when skimming the waves, had all but disappeared along the California coastline and other places where the species had once massed.

A couple of generations of California beachgoers grew up never seeing this sensational bird, a victim, like the bald eagle and the peregrine falcon, of DDT's tendency to create eggs too thin to survive the incubation process.
