Study: Rising vehicle deaths for returning GIs

An Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center study of accident and associated statistics shows that during fiscal years 2002 through 2007, 186 soldiers died within one year of returning from deployments, according to a CRC press release.

About 30 percent of the deaths occurred within the first month of returning from the war zone and 63 percent within the first six months, according to the statement; of the 186 fatalities, 145 involved privately owned vehicles during off-duty hours.

The Army has concluded that when soldiers return from a deployment or some other type of controlled environment, they experience a newfound and sometimes treacherous freedom without the oversight of leaders.

In a bid to keep soldiers from getting hurt or killed when they get home from those deployments, the Army is hoping to enlist the help of family members with the rollout its Family Engagement Kit.

Army safety officials are convinced that oversight, control and structure are beneficial to achieve an accident-free environment, the release said.
