Vista has MANY safeguards built in. You will still need an anti virus software and there are several out there. I use Windows Live OneCare mainly because it does a lot more than just antivirus and is relatively cheap and I can use it on all my computers with the same license. To check your C drive, click on your Windows button in the lower left hand corner, look along the right hand list of the pop-up and select computer. You will see your drives there.

You can also chose control panel instead of computer and then click on programs & features which will show you everything installed and allow you to remove them if you want.
