69. Sunshine
You're correct. It can be measured. The good thing about D from sunshine is that even though you get really high IUs at a time, the body can process it without storing too much, unlike supplements, which are fat soluble.

I was found to be D deficient about a year ago and took 50,000 IUs a week for about 12 weeks. I'm now to take 1,000 IUs a day, although I think if I just get out in the sun more again (without burning) I'll be fine.

The overuse of sunscreen is big problem with D deficiency, along with the fact that people just don't get outside like they used to. Dr. Michael Holick at Boston University has good information (articles) online about this issue. He is (or was last time I looked) head of endocrinology at BU, and did have a professorship in the dermatology department until he lost it by recommending moderate sun exposure without sunscreen.
