71. Sorry but that is a gross and deliberate distortion of the facts.
I understand people who think as you do are very smug in your understanding that Stalin was probably and atheist. Imperial Russian Orthodox seminary school will do that to a person. No one, not me, TZ, Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris or Hirsi Ali is advocating a totalitarian, dogmatic state that systematically murders anyone who disagrees. Nor are any of us imposing nonbelief on anyone else as an article of faith. Rather atheism is a conclusion based on an examination of evidence. Even though the Soviet Union was nominally atheistic and hostile to religion, it actually had far more in common with theocracy than it did with skepticism. Nonbelief cannot be the basis of a totalitarian state.

Sadly, this is not true with religion or any of the quasi-religious totalitarian systems like the Nazis, Fascists, Chinese or North Korean Communists. When someone violates the will of whatever the god du jour is, that is carte blanch to remove that person from the human race by murder, enslavement, eviction, torture or disinheritance. The worst penalities have always been reserved for religious offenses. While there are notable exceptions--many of whom are on this web site--as a rule, religious minds will never be happy until every knee is bent and in their direction. Just think of the suffering caused by absolutely insignificant differences of opinion among various forms of Christianity. Does the Son proceed from the Father and the Holy Ghost or just the Father? WAR!!!

So, to throw out Stalin as some kind of trump card is ignorant at best and dishonest at worst.
