12. NH: House upholds vetoes of voting bills (Voter ID)

House upholds vetoes of voting bills
By Norma Love, Associated Press Writer | June 28, 2006

CONCORD, N.H. --Two bills introducing stricter voter identification requirements are dead after the House failed Wednesday to override the governor's vetoes of both.

One bill would have required residents to show photo identification to vote. The other required voters to list the same address on their driver's license as their voting record.

Supporters of the ID bill argued it would provide a safeguard against fraud and noted identification is required for many activities besides voting.

Rep. Richard Kennedy, R-Hopkinton, said owning a gun is as much a constitutional right as voting and yet people buying guns must show identification.
