42. individual states
My recollection is that there were a significant number of states that eventually went for Kerry that started out with a significant Bush advantage. I have to check on this, but I believe it's correct. At first I thought the change over time reflected the difference between votes coming in from rural/suburban and urban areas, now I wonder whether that's so. It's possible to look at the numbers as they were updated over the night (we have the tape), also to compare the patterns with 2000 (which we don't have yet, but plan to get).
