CTV.ca: Canadians regionally split on political storm

Canadians are deeply divided in their feelings about the political storm that has waged over the past week, with new poll numbers showing a level of regional tension that hasn't been seen since Quebec teetered on the brink of separation.

Peter Donolo of the The Strategic Counsel polling firm said poll results, which were first published in The Globe and Mail, show almost mirror-opposite sentiment among residents of Quebec, and the western provinces.

"We haven't seen this kind of dramatic regional division since the Meech Lake crisis of the Mulroney government when the fabric of the country was really being torn," Donolo told CTV.ca on Friday.

That deep rift in regional sentiment is a more difficult hurdle than the current political uncertainty, for the government to overcome, Donolo said.

"That's the more serious, substantive crisis -- the unity crisis. And I think it's reflected in these numbers and that's what (Harper) is going to have to deal with moving forward."
