Report: Former Michigan coach Schembechler dies

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Former University of Michigan head football coach Bo Schembechler has died after collapsing during the taping of a television show.

According to WXYZ-TV in Detroit, Schembechler was preparing for the taping of the "Big Ten Ticket" show at the studio on Friday morning when he collapsed. He was taken to Providence Hospital in Southfield and later died. He was 77 years old.

Also according to the television station, Schembechler had a pacemaker implanted just two weeks ago. He previously had two major heart attacks and two quadruple bypass surgeries.

During his 21-year tenure at Michigan that ended after the 1989 season, Schembechler posted a 194-48-5 record. His teams won or tied for 13 Big Ten championships. In his 27-year coaching career, he posted a mark of 234-65-8.

His death comes on the eve of Michigan's biggest football game of the season. The second-ranked Wolverines travel to take on top-ranked Ohio State on Saturday. The winner will secure a spot in the BCS national championship game.
