Educator, author Diane Ravitch discusses "The Death and Life of the Great American School System" at Wayne State University
September 20, 2010

Educator and author Diane Ravitch will speak on "The Death and Life of the Great American School System" at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23 in Wayne State University's Community Arts Auditorium. Ravitch will share her views on public education, including controversial positions on measurement and testing, accountability, school choice, privatization and mayoral control. Her more than 40 years of experience as an education historian gives credence to her insights and opinions about how best to prepare students to contribute in a 21st-century economy.

The program is part of WSU's Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society (FOCIS) series created by President Emeritus Irvin D. Reid, who now holds the Eugene Applebaum Chair in Community Engagement at the university and is director of FOCIS.

"Supporting K-12 education is an important part of Wayne State's community engagement mission and a key component of the service learning curriculum that our Honors College students undertake by tutoring in Detroit Public Schools," said President Emeritus Reid. "Diane Ravitch's message resonates with Detroiters who are fighting for their children by calling for quality in public education and demanding accountability through meaningful reform."

Ravitch is Research Professor of Education at New York University and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. From 1991 to 1993, she was assistant secretary of education and counselor to Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander in the administration of President George H.W. Bush. President Clinton appointed her to the National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees federal testing. She is the author or editor of more than 20 books, including The Language Police and Left Back, and her articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines. A native of Houston, Ravitch graduated from Houston public schools, Wellesley College and Columbia University. She lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.
