Sources: Bernero will run for governor
By Todd A. Heywood 1/5/10 1:27 PM

LANSING Sources close to Lansing Mayor Virgil Bernero say Americas angriest mayor is in the race for the top job in Michigan.

After months of recruitment by the White House and Democratic National Committee officials, sources close to Bernero have told Michigan Messenger that he will run for the Democratic nomination for governor. When the 45-year-old mayor is expected to formally announce his plans is unknown.

Throughout his mayoral campaign, Bernero denied persistent rumors that he might seek the governors office in 2010. But at the end of November, he told the Lansing State Journal that he had been approached by Democratic National Convention officials about possibly running. He said he was unlikely to seek the post. But 24 hours later he said he was seriously considering a run. In December, he announced he was forming an exploratory committee.
