Quotes on Marriage

What do you think of these quotes and to what do you think they refer?

"These types of marriages are abominable. If allowed they would pollute America."

"Such unions are not only unnatural, but always productive of deplorable results, such as increased effeminate behavior in the population."

"They are productive of evil, and evil only, without any corresponding good in accordance with the God of nature."

The first quote is taken from Virginia law. The other two are taken from Georgia. All three are responses in the mid 1960s to interracial marriage.

Historically, civil rights advances in our nation have been decided by the courts and not the will of the people. For instance, in 1956, 73% of Arkansas residents supported segregation. It took not only a ruling of the court, but military intervention to bring an end to the practice.

In 1967, 72% of Americans were opposed to interracial marriage. That was the same year of Loving v. Virginia where SCOTUS ruled against public opinion, calling bans on interracial marriage unconstitutional.

Today we find ourselves having much the same conversations yet the playing field is being changed as we speak. On March 12, 1999, The Birmingham News reported about their legislature's consideration of removal of a stagnant law -- the law banning interracial marriage. In that article, future president George Bush said, "...take the issue away from the courts and put it directly before the American people."

We can no longer afford our courts to be taken out of the process -- we can definitely no longer allow the powers-that-be to place individuals on our court who are unwilling to uphold our Constitution and Bill of Rights regardless of public sentiment.
