I have just been rereading Garrison Keillor's essays in "Homegrown Democrat" and this would fit right in.

The America that I grew up in was much like his, not perfect and with many things that needed to be changed, e.g., civil rights and equal opportunity for all among them (these STILL need work), but where the fringe was not only recognized as the fringe, but called out as such, and where news networks actually reported the news.
