David Paterson facing troubles in NY

David Paterson, the NY Governor who will name Sen. Hillary Clinton's replacement to the Senate today or tomorrow, is facing tough times in New York. He is facing a fight with the Sneca Indian tribes and legislators in Albany are in a fighting mood against his budget proposal and say that he has no ideas and is doing business the old fashioned way.

Tuesday's budget hearing was the first since 1965 in which Senate Republicans, who lost control of the chamber last November to Democrats, were in the minority. Sen. Carl Marcellino, R-Nassau County, the former chairman of the Environmental Conservation Committee, sounded very much like the loyal opposition as he ripped all of the budget plans.

"I don't see innovative initiatives," he said. "We need to think outside the box, and I don't see that yet. If we keep on doing business the old-fashioned way, we're going to go the way of the dinosaurs." He suggested maybe the Parks Department could be eliminated, with its responsibilities spread among other agencies.
"He (Gov. Paterson) also talked of the state being compensated for the privileges and benefits the Senecas enjoy being located in New York.

The governors comments came a day after Seneca Nation President Barry E. Snyder Sr. said the tribe wants to begin collecting $2 tolls on vehicles traveling the Thruway through reservation land in Irving and called on President-elect Barack Obama to send in federal troops to protect the tribes sovereignty from New Yorks efforts."

So Governor Paterson will be vulnerable in the NY Primaries in 2010 and if President Obama does not work hard for him (or campaign for him with gusto), Paterson will be another Malcolm Wilson in NY state history. Let's see how Paterson plays the NY Senate seat Clinton replacement: Caroline or Andrew...
