36. A wonderful story.
But isn't it incredible that we do such a poor job of educating our children in this country, that they don't even understand how important voting is, what an honor and privilege it is? I will never know why civics isn't a requirement, and not just one class in high school, but right through all the grades. Why aren't all 18 year olds registered automatically? I had a professor in college who said that all Americans should be required to pass the same citizenship test that immigrants do, and that it should be a real occasion, a "Welcome to Citizenship" ceremony, with registration a part of it. I think he was onto something. If we made much more of a big deal of it, we might not have people going most of their lives without voting.
