At the same time, it is hard to imagine anything in the debates having a significant impact on perceptions of Clinton. She has been in the political spotlight at the national level for 15 years and people have strong opinions about her. No matter how we ask about her, opinions are fixed. In recent months, the number who would definitely vote for her in a general election has stayed between 28% and 30%. The number who would definitely vote against has stayed between 46% and 48%. Her favorables have been roughly equally divided between positive and negative assessments all year. But, she is very popular among Democrats (currently, 84% of Democrats have a favorable opinion of the former First Lady).

Why would we want to nominate someone whom the Republicans feel is their best chance to retain the White House in 2008?
