4. The inventor of cynicism: St. Murphy the Monastic
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 08:04 AM by TechBear_Seattle
St. Murphy the Monastic was an Irish abbot in the 6th century. Once thought to be a pious legend about long-suffering faith, his existence was recently verified with the discovery of several ancient manuscripts from the ruins of monastary on the north Irish coast. Included in those manuscripts was St. Murphy's journal, wherein he wrote the passage that has long been attributed to him:

That the faith of the Faithful might be tested as gold in a crucible, God did decree from the beginning of the world: Anything that could go wrong, would.

Oh, my. Are those Viking longboats coming in to the harbor?

He is not to be confused with St. Murphy the Disciple, Rebbe Murfi'ah, the Chinese sage Muru Fu, the Sufi mystic Murffiya or Dr. John Murphy, formerly of UC Berkeley.
