"It is one thing to say we each have the right not to be killed. It is another to say that we each have the right to live comfortably, with adequate food, healthcare, shelter, education, and opportunities for emplyment. It is even more powerful to say that we each have the right to worship as we choose, to say what we choose, and to be governed by leaders we choose. And, perhaps, the most powerful statement of all is to say that we each hold these rights equally -- that no one person is more entitled to any of these rights than the next, regardless of his or her sex, race, or station in life." -- Jimmy Carter, "Talking Peace" (1993), pp. 21
As war rages in the Middle East, we should not lose sight of the fact that our goverment has let us down here at home, as well. Their domestic and social policies are as misguided and damaging as their foreign policy. The laws they have chosen to enact, or disregard are laying waste to as many lives as they ones they are flauting abroad.
It is NOT ENOUGH to say we must vote them out in '06 and '08. Not anymore. We have to elect men and women who will courageously represent us, right down to the least among us, with courage, vigor, determination, and the liberal value of compassion. We must elect those who will wage peace instead of war, build rather than tear down, love instead of hate, and empower rather than destroy, and they must be willing to do it for us all equally and without regard for our color, our station in life, our sex or our sexual orientation.
No one who votes with the Republicans on any regular basis should be excused... not even the ones in our own Party. No one who enables the Republicans should be forgiven or forgotten when we enter the voting booth this November or November '08. If we don't find the courage to demand better representation from those we elect to represent us, we deserve the representation we get. And that just isn't cutting it with me anymore.
Democrats are better than this. We are strong, smart, courageous, and compassionate. We now have to use that strength, intelligence, courage, and compassion for the betterment of this country and the health of her Constitution.
I ask you to please work to find real solutions to the problems we face, and vote for those who will be the solution to those problems, rather than the instigator for more. These next elections will forever effect our path as a country and a people. Inform yourselves, and vote wisely. Encourage your family and friends to do the same.
Thanks,
TC
