68. TIME rarely gets it right.
They were at least 10 years behind in changing the title from "Man of the Year," and their choices are usually wrong or belated. Last year they picked Bushie II when they should have named Karl Rove. (Remember, the choice is not who you like, but who you think had the most impact, and that was clearly Rove.)

Sometimes the best way to approach such a selection is not to think in terms of individuals, but movements. In 2005, there were four major "movements," if you will: (1) the emergence of the anti-war movement, (2) Plamegate and other efforts to manipulate people and facts, (3) Mediagate, the media's complicity in all of this, and (4) the incompetence of the Bush Administration as exemplified by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In various ways, these are all related, of course, but if we rolled them all into one, the Person of the Year would again be George W. Bush (or perhaps Dick Cheney). (Remember the choice is not who you like, but who had the most impact on our lives.)

Frankly, I don't think the people at TIME have the guts to touch either #3 or #4. As much as I like Fitzgerald, I don't think he is the person of the year. As someone else said, maybe next year.

Personally, I'd go with the composite "Anti-War American," as exemplified by Cindy Sheehan, Paul Hackett, and John Murtha, but, of course, TIME won't do that either.

"Mother Nature" is cute, but it's also a cop-out, which makes it the most likely choice for the wise old men at TIME.
