Surely we will persuade the people with think-tank white papers and editorials in The Nation and The New York Review of Books rather than with art and popular music. It is much more important for middle-aged white people with graduate degrees to sit around agreeing with each other than to try to communicate with young people or the working poor or people who listen to hip-hop.
