13. EU's Solana blasts Gaza clampdown, eyes US support
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana reiterated Tuesday Europe's condemnation of Israel's demolitions of homes in the Gaza Strip, and said the United States broadly shares the EU's views.

Speaking after talks with Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak al-Khalifa, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Arab League, he stressed that the Israeli action breaches the terms of the so-called road map for Middle East peace.

"I would like to join him in saying that what is taking place now in Gaza is something that we have to condemn and to condemn very strongly," he said, standing next to the Bahraini minister.

The clampdown is "something that goes very much against the letter and the spirit of the roadmap.. we would like to condemn it and condemn it in the most firm manner," he added.

Asked if he would like the United States to put more pressure on the Israelis, he said: "We would like to have a united line," adding that the EU and the US line "is not very different ... on this particular issue.
