Peretz: Evacuation of illegal settlement outposts to begin shortly

By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent

Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Tuesday he intends to begin evacuating illegal settlement outposts in the near future.

During a visit to the Israel Defense Forces Central Command, Peretz said, "We intend to do this. Illegal settlers don't bring honor or support to the Israeli population in the territories."

About a week ago, Peretz and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert extend demarcation orders for 12 illegal outposts in the West Bank. Their predecessors, prime minister Ariel Sharon and defense minister Shaul Mofaz, also signed demarcation orders two years ago for 13 outposts.

The demarcation orders are meant to overrule clauses of Jordanian law in place in the West Bank that made it more difficult to carry out efficient evacuations. The orders are also meant to evade opposition and appeals filed by residents of the outposts.
