Orleans, Genesee residents among 10 charged with illegal gun sales

Ten people statewide — including residents of Genesee and Orleans counties — face criminal charges in connection with the sale of firearms at gun shows without performing a background check on buyers, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Wednesday.

Gun sellers from Erie and Ulster counties also were among those nabbed in the sting operation, in which undercover agents were sent to buy firearms at a half-dozen gun shows since May. The agents used hidden cameras and microphones to tape the transactions, Schneiderman said.

"I'm very sorry to report that every gun show they visited, undercover investigators who explicitly stated that they could not pass background checks were able to obtain firearms," Schneiderman said at a news conference at the state Capitol.

While state law doesn't require a check in private, individual-to-individual rifle transactions, all buyers at gun shows are subject to a national background check under the state's business law.
