If some of those bummer polls are to be believed - that most 18-year-olds wouldn't know a newspaper from a ukulele or that their idea of "history" is, like, last week - then there definitely will be a few thousand watching Tuesday's "Choose or Lose: Work It" on MTV (at 10:30) with the same question in mind. Who's that white- haired dude?

For their benefit, we provide this capsule bio. Born 87 years ago, he was a reporter and member of the so-called "Writing 69th" during the Second World War (that was the Big One, dude), who went on to become TV's most esteemed and influential anchorman, with a direct impact on three of the great stories of the last half century (civil rights, Vietnam, the space race).

That's right. Uncle Walter.
