1. I'd say it depends on the woman in question.
Me, I'd rather have *one* thing (perhaps more expensive, perhaps not) that I really, really want (and *no* diamond rings, thank you, diamonds are boring and often -- although not always -- finance unsavoury causes and cartels!) than get bombarded with cheap little gifts which will just clutter up my space, as if I don't have enough junk to start with. Other women are probably different.

I think about the only accurate way to answer questions along the line of "what do women want?" is to ask them, one at a time, and individually (because you can no more lump "women" into a homogenous opinion group than you can "men," or "white people" or any other generalized cluster like that).
