It's not so much the drinking as it is the reason to drink. If you're doing it to avoid something else, it may be a problem. There are such things as "dry drunks", too, which are people who aren't actively drinking but still have a problem with alcohol.

There are also heavy/problem drinkers who are not truly alcoholics (i.e., addicted to alcohol), too. I was one of those. I had a problem with drinking too much, but did not fit the criteria to be an alcoholic. However, I do have bipolar disorder, and was more than likely using alcohol to self-medicate. Since I've been properly treating the bipolar disorder, I've lost the urge to drink and no longer crave alcohol.
