I don't think it's necessary.
My helmet is what is called ~ a brain-bucket because it's a 1/2 helmet. I wouldn't advise that for two wheels.
The biggest problem I have riding is protecting my skin from bugs, pebbles and stuff being kicked-up or thrown from cars. I was riding in shorts & tank tops up here in the north because the sun isn't as strong but I'll need more protection this winter.
