I know all too well what that hate mail is like. Back during Clinton's first presidential campaign, my father (then a lt. col. in the Air Force) wrote a letter to the editorial page of the Chicago Tribune arguing that gays should not be barred from military service and that trying to keep them out was bad for national defense.

We're talking about one stupid letter to the editor in one stupid newspaper (not even a national or nationally renowned one at that), and my father got a flood of anonymous death threats.
