139. Holyoke, Mass. in the early 1960s was a horribly lousy city
dealing with loss of manufactuing, and quite poverty-stricken as well. The school I went to in 4th grade was condemned, and torn down the following year.

Holyoke is still pretty sad, but they're trying. They've restored the magnificent old city hall, and put in a children's museum downtown. But it's still a poor city. I'm sure they're not allowed to put that many kids in a classroom anymore, even in the Catholic schools.
