They had a "coach" help the actors with the accent--in fact he is a sometimes guest/contributor to A Prairie Home Companion, and has a book titled "How to Talk Minnesotan."

A lot of people from around here HATED that movie, curiously the people who are most adamant in their criticism are closest to it in their speech! I loved the movie, if nothing else wherever I've traveled in this world everybody has seen Fargo so I can explain to them where in the US I am from.

And I'm not denying I have an accent, but I have to work a little bit to really crank it up. Unless I'm drunk and around my outstate relatives ;)

For other accents though--the truly indecipherable Scots is awesome!
