Many years ago I worked for a dept store chain that had a policy that they'd issue an in store credit if your check had not had time to clear the bank or if there was no receipt. It could not be redeemed for cash, but it could be used for merchandise in the store at any time.

It also could be presented for a MAILED refund if you asked for one--they'd hold the refund until they knew your check cleared...

Wlamart is not known for excessive concern for customer relations, so I'm not terribly shocked to hear about your experience. It is too bad, however, because in the old days they might have actually noticed when the pissed off shoppers never came back. Today i doubt they'd care even IF they noticed.
