14. On her part it was love. His, not so much, more advancement for himself and family.
George and, especially, Elizabeth were not thrilled with Liz's choice. She had been in love with Phil since she first met him early in the war. They didn't like it because he was a nephew and protege (and at some level son) of Louie, Earl Montbatten. They believed, with cause, Montbatten was working payback for the number done on his father during WWI - a saga in itself. Further, Phil was kinda damaged goods. His father had been an exile Greek prince and died penniless, Mom a religious crank (altho she is a Righteous of Nations for saving the lives of dozens of Greek Jews). All four of his sisters had married German aristos. Finally, at the time Phil was second in line to the Greek throne. Balkan politics being what they were, there was the nightmarish prospect that the British heir presumptive could wake one morning Queen of Greece.

She probably fell for him because he had more than a whiff of the Viking prince about him - rogue, forceful, worldly, handsome - very different from the chinless Guard wonders she'd known as her possible husbands.

Him - preferable to a half ass career in a shrinking navy - the best he could probably hope for. I suspect Uncle Louie made it clear that nephew closed his eyes and thought of the family else he'd be dropped like a hot rock.
