It's not a matter of baggage.
It's how the show presents itself.
Plus, adding in elements from the old show (e.g. the Autons), it makes that baggage relevant.
The new series has some good episodes, yes. But it does make a mockery of the classic series when it's not trying to do a parody of it.
My main problem is in the writing; it's the first era of the show (the 9th Doctor era) that doesn't take itself seriously when it should. The comedy in particular is all wrong...
