Back in 1928, when presenting a case study, he said of
an anonymous patient,

"...something is not quite right. He tries to be terribly
righteous, and only those who have the ability or tendency
to be very wrong try to be so very right, to attain per-
fection." -- Dream Analysis,

At the thousand foot level, this observation derives
from Jung's view that the unconcious and the ego exist in
a compensatory relationship.
