Speak out to Congress: Investigate the Lies, End the Occupation of Iraq!

OCTOBER 9 AND 10 NATIONAL ADVOCACY DAYS TO PROTEST THE WAR AND OCCUPATION OF IRAQ


October 10th marks the one year anniversary of the Congressional vote to endorse the Bush Administration\'s war against Iraq. Join thousands of people as we call and meet with our Senators and House Representatives and tell them what we think about the occupation of Iraq.

Right now Congress is considering the Bush administration\'s request for another $87 billion for the occupation, in addition to the $79 billion that was already approved. That\'s more than the federal government\'s total discretionary spending for education, job training, and employment and social services combined.

At the same time, members of Congress are deciding where they stand on whether to call for a special counsel to investigate the Bush administration\'s "outing" of a CIA undercover operative, apparently in retaliation against her husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who questioned the Bush administration\'s credibility on the issue of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.

Meanwhile in Iraq, the war and occupation have already cost the lives of more than 7,300 innocent Iraqis and 320 U.S. soldiers. Millions of Iraqis have been deprived of safety, and reliable, affordable access to electricity, food, and gas. Hundreds of thousands have lost their jobs, and Iraqis are living under a military occupation that gives them no control over their government or resources. U.S. troops in Iraq are facing a dozen guerrilla-style attacks every day, and more than 320 U.S. soldiers have died since the war began.

The Senate is in recess this week and many of them will be in their home offices. (You can find their numbers in the phone book.) The House is in session so you can call either their Washington, DC office or their home office. The phone number of the Capitol Switchboard is 201-224-3121.

Tell them what you think about:

• The cost of the war and occupation: Should the U.S. government really spend another $87 billion for an unpopular, colonial-style occupation in the Middle East while many communities in the United States are feeling the impact of huge cuts to education, health care, and other social service programs?

• An investigation of possible lies: Tell your Senators and Representatives what you think about the need for a special counsel to investigate who in the Bush administration leaked the name of a CIA operative as retaliation against someone who questioned their Iraq intelligence. Also let them know you think we need a thorough, public investigation into whether the Bush administration misled the public with claims that Iraq was an imminent threat to the U.S. and its neighbors.

• The occupation of Iraq: When is the occupation going to end, when will political power be turned over to Iraqis, and why does the U.S. insist on pressuring the U.N. and other countries to support its illegal occupation?

** Meet with your Senators in their district offices on October 9th **

The meetings will take place this Thursday, October 9, at 12:30 p.m. local time. In many cases, your Senators will not be there for your visit, but they will certainly hear about it if there’s a strong citizen presence at his or her office.

The format is pretty simple: Win Without War will send you a picture of a voided blank check to print out and bring with you, and the organizers will call ahead to let the Senate office know you\'re coming. You print out the check, write your note to your Senator, and gather with other folks at 12:30 pm at the office. Everyone shares who they are and why they\'re there, and delivers their statement to a staff member or to the Senator. It\'ll be fun and easy, and it\'ll send a clear and loud message to the Senate that constituents are concerned.
