...I am deeply troubled that I believed the post-WWII "NEVER AGAIN!" crap, and thought mankind had learned through such global tragedy that we would never see militarism and genocide -- and the embrace of these horrors -- be suffered to repeat.

I used to study stuff like this, in history. I never imagined I would ever live in a negatively transformational era; this I used to wonder "How did such a thing ever happen?" -- now, I think I know -- evil rises stealthfully, and people find themselves engulfed in events, unable to escape, like a tsunami.

Sadly, I don't see how any of this is going to play out for the foreseeable future.

You don't see them on CNN, but I know there still are authentic moral leaders out there. They are opposing the rise of fascism in our time just as surely as a young Karol Wojtyla did Poland, against the Nazis and the Soviets.

It may be decades before we emerge from this madness.
