WATSONVILLE — Jesus Alberto Suárez del Solar joined the Marines because he wanted to make the world a better place. Long concerned by the social problems caused by drug addiction, the young man believed he could fight drug trafficking through his military experience.

But the 20-year-old warrior was killed fighting by "friendly fire" in Iraq earlier this year when he stepped on an unexploded U.S. cluster bomb. Now his father is speaking out against the war that took his son.<snip>

Fernando Suárez del Solar, who believes military recruiters "put more emphasis and psychological stress" on Latinos and African-Americans, said Latino parents are so busy "working long hours in the fields that they don’t have time to help students get information" about what joining the military will really entail for them, or about other possible career options.

Besides, "the military recruitment information is in English anyway," Suárez del Solar said, and many parents do not read English. <snip>

I doubt that this will make head line news.
