Schiavo smoking gun: The actual letter from Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Dunce)

to both Schiavos, purporting to confer the status of a Federal witness on Terri.

As you will plainly see, it does no such thing:

It is addressed to "Mr. Michael Schiavo" and 'Mrs. Theresa Marie Schiavo", no address given.

It reads "... I am requesting the presence of both of you to appear..." (emphasis mine). No formal demand is made for their presence, let alone any citation of authority for same. No location for the alleged hearing is even provided! (Hint: Here's the location from the HELP committee website: http://help.senate.gov/bills/hlh_70_bill.html )

In short, and I proudly say this as someone without a shred of formal legal education, this document carries no more authority than if Sen. Enzi had found it at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box (and who's to say he didn't?) No wonder Judge Greer didn't snap to attention when some lawyer came running up to him waving that in his face!

Edit: Thsi shows either that all this poppycock about "Federal witness status" is just meant to grab the headlines and pander to the religious right, or that the repuke leadership consists entirely of brainless ninnies, or -- perhaps both?
