If you look at how these folks were parented, it's all about control of someone else's will and the original sin of children, who are always trying to manipulate the parent from birth. They are taught to never EVAH question what their "superiors" tell them, whether it's the good reverend telling them that gays are EEEEVIL or the parent who says they deserved to be hit for spilling their milk on the kitchen floor.
