there simply aren't enough facts available to examine the issue. Primarily what we would do is spout off sans data, feelings would be hurt, the more paranoid among us would not be reassured nor those who do not enjoy a good high (and in my view healthy) level of paranoia would feel secure.

Remember the film "Strange Days"?

The question is not whether you're paranoid. The question is whether you're paranoid enough.

Indeed, these are strange days and I would take none of the possibilities off the table.
