The reich wing fundamentalists would abandon Bush if he said the same thing that Cheney said. Some would abandon him if he just waffled on Cheney's statements. Bush can not possibly win without the reich wing fundamentalist vote. If Bush repudiates Cheney's views, some moderate republican and independent voters may have second thoughts about supporting Bush. This would be more likely if the democrats made sure to publicize the statements and actions of the reich wing. It is an opportunity to weaken Bush that the democrats should take advantage of.
