4. our college voted
and we decided to stay because many of us felt safer there than we did at home. I was among them since, when I called home totally distraught that afternoon, my mother said "they probably deserved it." I knew that couldn't be true and it took years for my mother and I to get over that. She apologized later but I never forgot it, since I would have been on of the "them" that deserved it.

That week at my college -- which had a very strong, liberal tradition -- was very interesting because we had a lot of informal sessions to discuss all kinds of things. It was like a week-long teach-in and there were probably 50-100 outsider students from other less hospitable colleges staying in our dorms and attending these sessions.
