I'm a big believer in separation of church and state.

Shouldn't you think of all the potential problems of such a thing? Such as how it opens up churches to more government control?

Additionally, it is well established that the IRS has used audits, or the threat of audits, or the threat of revoking tax exempt status as a means of punishing certain groups which the federal government does not like. Through tax breaks, sin taxes and audits, the federal government has managed to gain some measure of control over virtually every private association in America.

Yes, there are churches that abuse this exemption. But taxing churches will open the door for more abuses that you can imagine. It is not in the interests of free exercise of religion to tax churches.
